For the first time in the history of the Austrian Parliament, a person with far-right views has been elected as its president. Herbert Kickl, a 37-year-old member of the Freedom Party, received a majority of votes for this position.
His election has sparked intense disputes in the parliament and society of the country. Opposition politicians expressed their concern over the strengthening of far-right powers in Austrian politics.
"We must remain vigilant and do everything possible to prevent the spread of xenophobic ideas, anti-Semitism, and intolerance in society," stated one of the opposition deputies.
Kickl's supporters, in turn, believe that his election reflects the true opinion of a significant part of the population, which expresses certain concerns and requires changes in the country's politics.
