When Khaled Al-Nuaman arrived from Syria 10 years ago, he thought the end of his journey would be a safe haven. Until then, he had not received a letter from the Austrian government.
"When I read the letter, my heart sank," he says, recounting the notification in which it was stated that his residency in Austria is now illegal. "I felt like I lost my ground."
For Khaled Al-Nuaman, like many other refugees, the status of residency suddenly changed after the new law came into effect in Austria. He is currently fighting to get his residency legalized, hoping that his history and circumstances will help him remain in the country he considers his home.
