Austrian Study Shows Music Helps Control Appetite

Austrian researchers have unveiled an innovative and simple method for controlling appetite and reducing overeating, which could offer an alternative to costly procedures like fat-burning injections. A recent study conducted by the University of Graz showed that listening to a favorite song while eating can decrease the intense craving for sweets and fatty foods, whereas listening to disliked music has the opposite effect, increasing the desire for unhealthy meals. The study involved 106 volunteers in their twenties, who were asked to listen to pieces they liked or disliked while sitting at a table full of sweets and fruits. Researchers used cameras to track the eye movements of participants to determine what attracted their attention the most, in addition to recording their food choices. The results, published in the journal Appetite, revealed that participants who listened to their favorite music chose healthier options like grapes more often, while those who had to listen to disliked songs showed a greater tendency towards sugary sweets. The researchers stated that music has a direct impact on mood, which in turn affects food decisions, emphasizing that 'music could provide a promising tool for promoting healthy behaviors and reducing overeating'.
