The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety has announced that Danone is recalling specific batches of Aptamil and Milumil infant formula in Austria and Germany due to contamination with a toxic substance. The toxic agent, known as cerulide, which can cause nausea and vomiting, was discovered in ingredients supplied by a vendor in China to several infant formula manufacturers, including Nestle, Danone, and Lactalis.
These discoveries have triggered recalls in dozens of countries and sparked significant anxiety among parents. The contamination scare initially began with products from Nestle, raising alarms across the industry regarding supply chain safety. Consequently, major consumer goods groups have been forced to take immediate action to mitigate the risks.
In an effort to contain the panic and ensure consumer safety, the French consumer goods group previously moved to withdraw at least three batches of Aptamil infant formula in Germany back in January. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations into the source of the contamination proceed.
